From safe mattresses to decorating no-nos, make finding your nursery essentials a dream…

No matter if it’s your first or third, there are so many essentials to consider when there’s a baby on the way. One of the most important is their sleeping arrangements; whether you’ve chosen a cot, crib or bassinet, discover our top tips for finding the right one for baby.

Your dream team for baby’s sleep

During those first few months, baby needs to sleep in the same room as their parent. This should be in a crib, cot or bassinet (also known as a Moses basket), and not in the same bed as someone else.

When shopping for a crib, cot or bassinet, remember to check:

  • That it’s brand-new, with no missing or broken pieces
  • The mattress is firm and tight-fitting, and there’s no gap larger than two fingers between the mattress and sides of the cot
  • There are no decorative cutouts on the headboard or footboard
  • There are no drop-down sides

It’s safer to get a brand-new crib, cot or bassinet, but if you can’t do this, the NHS recommends that you buy a new mattress – you will especially need to do this if the mattress is soft, torn and dirty or doesn’t fit the crib properly.

Sweet dreams are safe dreams

An exciting part of preparing for parenthood is, of course, picking out their nursery décor. But, there are some safety guidelines you need to adhere to.

Check that:

  • The crib is free of bumpers, loose bedding, stuffed toys and pillows
  • Avoid decorating the cot with anything that baby can pull down, such as a mobile too close to their reach
  • Avoid placing the cot anywhere near safety hazards, such as radiators or windows; this includes the strings from blinds or curtains
